English

“Reading is the gateway for children that makes all other learning possible.” – Barack Obama

“One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.”  – Malala Yousafzai

At Cranmere, our English curriculum is designed to allow our children to develop into confident, creative writers, readers and communicators preparing them for later life as successful valuable and socially responsible citizens. We promote a positive attitude to reading by ensuring that this happens through a range of experiences and frequently, as well as celebrating our literary heritage. We nurture a positive climate for writing where our children take pride in their writing, can write clearly, imaginatively and for a range of audiences and contexts.  At all times we inspire our children to be confident orators and use many avenues – debates, assemblies, productions - to further their learning across all areas of the curriculum. We believe that our children need to develop a solid and secure knowledge in all aspects of Literacy, which is built on as they progress through our school, and in doing so we believe that these skills are crucial to a high-quality education in all their learning. At Cranmere we passionately ‘promote high standards of literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.' (National Curriculum 2014)

To support and develop children's love for reading, we have created a series of 'recommended reads' for every year group. To find out more about each year group's list, please take a look at the linked documents on this page.
